Art can be daunting, and the thought of collecting art can seem like a luxury reserved for wealthy elites. Some people become discouraged just thinking about delving into what they perceive to be an inaccessible, impenetrable culture. Truth be told, when it comes to starting your own art collection, there is absolutely no need to be intimidated. Not all collections must start with Monet's Bathers at La Grenouillère. In fact, anyone can be an art collector. Let these three simple tips ease you into the world of art and you will be well on your way to curating a unique collection that will enhance your life and your environment. 

Trust Your Instincts:

For starters, the very first step would be to identify what art gravitates to you. Whether it is a painting, a drawing, a piece of sculpture or fine-art photography, you will know immediately what catches your eye, and what appeals to your heart. Once you’ve determined what you love, you can start narrowing things down by considering what is in your budget and what will complement your decor. Now, before you make the leap of purchasing something it's imperative that you and absolutely love the artwork you're considering buying. It seems simple enough, right?

Unsure of where to even start when it comes to looking for art? Start hitting up as many local galleries or art museums as you can. Art museums will help you discover what type of art interests you, and they are an invaluable tool when it comes to expanding your knowledge of art, art history and basic terminology in general. Galleries are perfect for gaining insight and appreciation for the art that is being created and sold in your community. On top of that, they are an exceptional resource for exploring emerging artists and their work (which any gallery will be eager to talk about) that can sometimes be surprisingly affordable. The art world is a social world that is brimming with people who would be delighted in enriching your art education.

Be in the Know:

Now that you have identified the art you are going to love to collect and where to find it, it is important to stay connected to this community. Receive updates, invitations, and announcements by signing up for gallery mailing lists. Doing so will keep you aware of any upcoming exhibitions, openings, artist receptions, special events and new in general. Subscribe to art magazines and blogs. Take it one step further and start studying the artists, and periods of art history that interest you most (the internet, as you no doubt are aware, is an incredible resource). But ultimately, enjoy the experience in whole! The arts are fundamental to humanity, and happiness. After all, what is life without art to decorate it?
